Your questions answered
We would like a low cost funeral in York, only three of us will be attending the service and would like to use the small chapel. How much cheaper is the small chapel than the large and how does this affect your price?
The chapels cost the same, the price of our low cost funerals in York remains the same regardless of which chapel you choose. We would recommend the Ebor chapel which would be ideal for your service.
About York Crematorium
York Crematorium has two chapels. The ‘White Rose Chapel’ is the larger of the two being able to seat 100 people. Should it be required an additional 100 mourners can stand. The music system enables songs to be played during the service and even an electronic organ is available should it be required. There is also a screen for slideshows of family photographs.
The ‘Ebor Chapel’ is the smallest chapel we’ve ever done services in and is ideal for intimate family services. It’s accessed near the car port at the front of the building. The capacity of the small chapel is 25 people all of which is seated. The music system is also available to the Ebor chapel.
Please note that due to current restrictions the White Rose Chapel is operating at a reduced capacity of just 18 people.
The Ebor chapel is currently reduced to just 5 attendees. The waiting room and toilets are also not available, visitors can still use the outside toilets.
York Crematorium Parking
The carpark is located directly off Bishopthorpe Road and comprises 60 spaces 4 of which are disabled spaces. A footpath leads from the carpark, through the gardens to the main building.

York Crematorium News
Currently York Crematorium is limiting services to just 20 minutes and employing a 15 minute period between services in order to carry out cleaning before the next funeral begins. They are offering to record the ceremony and make it available to those unable to attend. Live streaming of the funeral service is available at additional cost.
In April 2020 City of York Council declared that, although cremations would proceed, services were being halted. No mourners were allowed at the crematorium. This basically meant that all cremations would be direct cremations. At the same time it was announced that to help affected families a video would be made available from within the chapel. This was despite government guidance permitting funerals to go ahead but being restriced to immediate family. A number of people complained about the very strict approach being taken by the council.
Resulting from these numerous complaints and a petition signed by more than 3,000 people the council announced a relaxation of their measures.
A decision was taken to permit up to ten close family members to have an outdoor service where they could pay their last respects. We held a service during this time, it was very strange. The coffin remained on the trolley at the front of the crematorium building whilst family members remained seated under the cover of a marquee. Despite it being a short service the family were incredibly grateful for the chance to say goodbye to their loved one, something many families before them had been unable to do.
Mid May 2020 saw the announcement that funeral services would resume at the start of June allowing a maximum of ten family members to be present in the White Rose Chapel. A complimentary recording of the service would be made available for those who could not attend.
It was announced in July that 18 people could attend funeral services in the large chapel but 5 would remain the limit in the small chapel.
