Your questions answered
Does a direct cremation in Leeds include return of ashes?
Once the cremation has taken place we will collect the ashes from the crematorium and return them to you, this service is included our price. We will arrange a return date and time that is best for you.
We would like a simple cremation in Leeds with a service and want to use a celebrant that our family has used before, is this included in your free personal service?
If you have a particular celebrant in mind you will have to pay them their fee which can be in excess of £200. Leanne offers her services as a celebrant for free to all our customers. Almost all of the low-cost funerals with services we carry out are led by Leanne the exceptions tend to be religious ceremonies.
We are based near Leeds but our loved one has passed away in a hospital in Sheffield are you still able to carry out a direct cremation?
Yes. Our coverage includes all of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, we’ll collect from any location in this region at no extra cost, it is included in our price. Once the cremation has taken place we will collect the ashes on your behalf. We will also return the ashes to you or arrange for them to be scattered.
My mum’s funeral is next week and we want to know if we should bring our children.
This is really a personal decision, all children are different and there are no set rules. I’m going to presume that we are talking about fairly young children here.
There are some things worth considering. What relationship did the child have with the deceased? If they were close then the funeral gives them a chance to say goodbye in the same way as it does for adults.
Have a chat with your child, this is really important. Is the child is old enough to talk about death at a basic level and understand the concept? Babies and very young children probably will not understand what is happening, so it might be best if they don’t attend.
About Lawnswood Crematorium Leeds
Lawnswood crematorium is one of our favourite crematoria. Time permitting we always take the opportunity to walk around the grounds and take in the history, beautiful trees and wildlife.
It offers something different in each season, a different atmosphere, but always calming and tranquil.
The site for the cemetery was selected because of its picturesque qualities and offered the perfect location away from the more built-up areas nearby. It was needed because St Michael’s churchyard in Headingley (located just over 2 miles away) was almost full.

The entrance is situated on Otley Road, as you enter the grounds you’ll see the main lodge on your right-hand side. The lodge and chapels were designed by the architect George Corson.
The crematorium, designed by WS Braithwaite, was opened in 1905 and the first cremation was performed on the 4th January of the same year. It was the first crematorium in the country to use a gas cremator.
Service Length
The crematorium operates on 40-minute service slots, this does include getting mourners in and out of the chapel so the service itself can last up to 30 minutes.
Near the chapel entrance there is a screen with details of the next service. Family and friends enter through the sliding glass doors and turn left down the corridor into the chapel.
Upon leaving the chapel mourners return via the same corridor but exit out into the cemetery at the other side of the building. This avoids disturbing any mourners waiting to attend the next service.
Chapel Capacity
Up to 80 people can be seated in the chapel and a few more can be accommodated by standing in the chapel. This assumes there are no official restrictions of numbers attending funerals.
Current attendance limit: 14 people are allowed inside the chapel and a further 10 can listen to the service from outside.
Lawnswood Crematorium Parking
There is limited parking on the grounds of the crematorium and it can get full during larger services. However, there is a large free to use car park opposite the entrance on the other side of the road.
There is a pedestrian crossing so getting to the crematorium once you’ve parked isn’t a problem. This additional car park has a flower shop.
Disabled Access
The driveways leading up to the chapel are flat and there are no steps to negotiate to enter the chapel itself.

Cottingley Hall Crematorium Parking
The car park at Cottingley Hall Crematorium used to be insufficient and was one of the main complaints coming from people who have attended funerals here. The council recognised that there was an issue. The area either side of the driveway (near the entrance) was widened and around 30 car parking spaces were added.

News
Leeds council closed all three Leeds Crematoria during the lockdown in April 2020. Only unattended (direct) cremations were permitted to go ahead.
No family or friends were allowed inside the crematorium/chapel buildings but allowance was made for a small number (maximum of 10) to watch their loved one be taken from the hearse and transferred into the chapel.
In May 2020 it was announced that services could resume in early June with limited attendance. The number of daily services was reduced to facilitate cleaning between scheduled slots.
Leeds City Council runs all three crematoria in Leeds, these are Lawnswood, Cottingley Hall and Rawdon. Between them, they operate 8 cremators and perform over 5,000 cremations each year.
