Your questions answered
We would like a direct cremation at Haltemprice crematorium but would like to spend a few minutes to say goodbye, can this be done? We don’t want a full funeral service.
Haltemprice crematorium does offer the option of having an attended direct cremation. This option is only available at 9am. You can have a few minutes in the chapel with your loved one to say your final goodbyes. You can also have background music should you want it. There is an extra charge for attended direct cremations, please contact us to discuss this further.
On your website it says that direct cremations are carried out in Hull, which crematorium do you use? We would specifically like to use Haltemprice.
We perform direct cremations at either Haltemprice Crematorium or Chanterlands Avenue Crematorium. If you have a preference then of course we will use whichever you prefer. There is no increase to the fee either way.
For those wanting to use a crematorium that isn’t local then an additional charge is likely to apply as often fees elsewhere are higher.
About Haltemprice Crematorium
Haltemprice crematorium was opened in 1998 after comprehensive refurbishment of the De La Pole Hospital chapel. The hospital closed in 1998 and all buildings except the chapel were demolished.
The chapel itself is a Grade II listed building and can accommodate 200 mourners. It provides a unique setting, offering a blend of traditional and modern features.
We visit many chapels as part of our profession and we’d have to say that this chapel, along with Lawnswood in Leeds, provides a sense of history not found at other crematoria. The wooden beams, sandy coloured stone and stained glass windows give a traditional feeling to the venue.
The grounds surrounding the chapel are largely lawned areas however a pond was added giving visitors a focal point whilst taking time to reflect.
Haltemprice Crematorium Opening Hours

News
Due to current restrictions the office buildings are closed to the general public, however the grounds remain accessible.
Sadly October 2020 saw a fire that has caused considerable damage to Haltemprice Crematorium chapel. The fire started around 9.30am on October 1st, just before a service was about to commence.
The fire was believed to have been caused by a cremation fan failing in the roof space.
The crematorium has since reopened.
