Your questions answered
Can you arrange a venue for the wake after we have a funeral service at Octon Crematorium?
We don’t organize wakes or events other than the funeral service itself. The crematorium does have a hospitality suite which facilitates wakes and offers the option of a full buffet, tea cakes and biscuits.
About East Riding Crematorium
East Riding Crematorium (often called Octon Crematorium) is surrounded by extensive farmland and provides a secluded place to hold a funeral service.
The location means that you can be sure of having a peaceful environment in which to pay your last respects.
The crematorium itself is located at the crossroads of Scarborough Road (B1249) and High Street (B1253).
Its grounds are bordered with large established trees making the plot even more intimate.
The grounds are always very well maintained. As you make your way up the main driveway you’ll see the lovely pond and fountain which sits in a large lawned area.
The crematorium opened in 1997. It is a modern building and fully equipped with all the facilities you’d expect of a contemporary crematorium. Unlike many other crematoria, it has its own catering room which can be hired for wakes.
The chapel is an impressive space and can accommodate 144 mourners seated with extra capacity by way of a balcony that can seat another 50. At the front of the chapel, above the altar, is a large stained glass window. The window vividly depicts The Ship of Souls.
What we like about this chapel is that, although it’s large, it still has a feeling of intimacy and warmth about it. We held a service there in early December and although it was a fairly bleak day weather-wise, the chapel was bright and uplifting. On the walls, there are large colourful prints that lend a modern vibrant feel to the venue.
Upon leaving the chapel you’ll make your way through the large enclosed flower court, it offers views over the gardens via its large windows.
The buildings and grounds here are always kept to a high standard. In early December the entrance to the chapel had a Christmas tree as did the book of remembrance room, both looked wonderful. We’ve added the pictures to the gallery, so please take a look, next time we’re there we’ll take some more pictures and keep our fingers crossed for better weather as the pictures don’t really do the place justice.
The book of remembrance room sits between the chapel building and the catering hall. Behind these buildings you’ll find the gardens of remembrance, again you can find pictures in the gallery. There are a number of memorial trees and rose bushes lining the path and benches for visitors to sit and reflect. A rockery and pond add to what growing garden of remembrance.
